Why is Delhi Police reluctant to arrest Geelani? | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Feb 9: The Hurriyat G chairman, Syed Ali Geelani is currently in New Delhi. He is meeting a variety of people ranging from the Pakistan High Commissioner to Sarabjeet's sister. The Delhi police have registered a case of sedition against him but seem reluctant to effect his arrest. Similarly other accused including the noted writer Arundhati Roy have not been taken into custody till date. While New Delhi seems to have shelved the idea of putting Geelani and other accused on trial for sedition, the senior separatist leader is least bothered about the case. He is not only seeking participation of the people of Jammu Kashmir in talks concerning future of the state but also promising Sarabjeet's sister all help in getting a visa to travel to Pakistan. Geelani's engagements in Delhi reflect that the elderly leader is not scared of getting arrested. On the contrary, the Delhi police seem scared of taking Geelani into custody. The Delhi High Court has issued a direction to the Delhi Police to investigate the case and file a status report. Notwithstanding the direction, the Police have not arrested the accused till date. When the petition was filed in the court for a direction to get a case of sedition registered, the Geelani's Hurriyat had perceived it as a `God sent opportunity' to raise Kashmir issue in an `Indian court'. Geelani's supporters went to the extent of saying that the case would give the leader a chance to say what people in India do not want to hear. "The conglomerate has the material and once the trial starts, nobody can stop them from saying what they could not say during seminars in Indian cities. Nobody can disrupt the proceedings of the court and the international community will focus attention on the trial", they said. |
