MC Anantnag plundering Maraz Heritage
2/10/2011 10:21:33 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Anantnag, Feb 10: Decision of Municipal Council Anantnag,to auction an old building of the Girls Higher Secondary School has frustrated both the Education Department and the locals, both accusing it of marring the career of students.
The building that is in its worsened condition is more than 60 years old which locals say is the property of Education Department and the Department have recently sanctioned Rs 15 lakh for its repairment.
However, as the work started, the Council claimed that the building was its property. “It issued an auction notice in dailies on January 1 informing its plan to auction the building,” the locals said.
Locals have already criticized the council through a press release. “Already a portion of the school has been occupied by the MC where they have set up a Sumo stand and on the other stretch the shops have been constructed. Now we will not tolerate further encroachment,” they said.
“ The structure is a school building since 1947 when it was titled as Jabriya School later as State School and after 50’s a school was titled as Central School and later upgraded as Boys Higher Secondary and now it is functioning as GHSS since last five years,” said school Principal, Maimoona Akhtar.
She said the school accommodates students from far flung areas due to availability of some special subjects and more than 2000 female students are enrolled in the school that the number may increase in this year. “All subjects are being taught in the school includes home science and commerce but due to accommodation problem we are forced to take classes in open,” she said, before 10 years when one partition of the building collapsed and the Block Development Department constructed three rooms free of cost at that time nobody objected particularly from Municipal Council maintaining that the land under the near by sumo stand is also the property of education department.
“I am proud of the dwellers from rural areas where they donate land for the construction of a School but what is going in our town I feel ashamed,” she said.
Chief Education officer, Anantnag, Manzoor Ahmad Paul said, “The building is the school property and even I have studied in it when it used to be a Central School. So, there is no question of MC taking it over.” “Any body can visit the building and can see the black boards and
carving in Hindi and Urdu, depicts it is property of Education Department,” he added.
Executive officer MC Anantnag Bashir Ahmad Dar, when contacted said, “The building is the property of Municipal Council Anantnag under Khasara Number 1573 and council have many times received directions from Director Urban Local Bodies and Deputy Chief Minister for the
Auction of the Building,” However Tehsildar Anantnag refused to comment saying that till demand
nothing can be said.
Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, Jaipal Singh, when contacted said, “The building is the property of the school and we have instructed the MC to stop its auction”
