| Eves helpless with criminals fearless in and around Delhi | | | Eves can be in danger when Adams are on the prowl. This is the story of India's capital and the North Capital Region (NCR) in which two major states surround the union capital, where rape,abductions,murders and molestation have caused insomania among the police and women. It is eye opening, rather eye jerking, when one is told that during the last one month there were 25 cases of rape and 42 molestations in Delhi.If you think the number is not quite alarming you need to know that more than 50 per cent of the toal rape and molestation incidents get either unreported or unregistered. In one belt of UP,Gaziabad,seven rape cases have been registered with the police during the last three weeks and in one case the victim was killed. Government sources believe that more than 45 per cent cases of rape and molestations remain unregistered. Whether it is Gurgaon area of Haryana or Noida belt of Uttar Pradesh the incidents of rape,molestation,murders and abductions have been on the rise despite measures being taken by the police for checking the menace. Those women employees working in BPOs are under panic after some of their colleagues were either molested or raped after they were dropped by the cabs,engaged by the employers,a few metres away from their residences. Honour killings are yet another nightmare for women in these areas.
Apart from the rapists and sex starved males loitering in and around Delhi the union capital has been tormented by bikers and by men with blades. These bikers attack women and after snatching their chains and purses remain untraced and unarrested.There are others who attack people, especially women,with blades. These bikers invariably waylay rich businessmen and any resistence from them invites instant death as the attackers are usually equipped with pistols and sharp edged weapons.With the rise in the incidents of molestations,rape,abductions,murders and chain snatching an impression has gained ground in Delhi and its adjoining areas that while the criminals have become fearless the police continue to be helpless.Experts feel intrigued over the spurt of these incidents in Delhi where the total police force is 75,000.They say that part of the problem is the result of poor policing.Even in sensitive areas where during the last over two years incidents of rape an molestations have been on the higher side the police have yet to set up nakas or establish their posts for carrying out round the clock patrolling.The police usually blames the BPOs and the call centres and those establishments where women work till late in the evenings for not taking in hand certain police recommended precautionary and preventive measures.
In a state of total helplessness women have been advised various do's and dont's.Among them are carrying a small knife,tazer gun pepper spray in their bags which could be used against the potential rapists.While walking on the streets one should avoid walking on narrow lane.One should not walk alone after the dusk and cover the journey by a radio taxi.If one had to walk one should walk quickly without getting distracted by the cell phones. Avoid routines like using the sames routes.It has become a difficult living for simple and innocent people, especially women in the union capital and its adjoining states.Those who feel disturbed and distracted by rising crime graph in the union capital and its adjoining areas have one satisfaction that even in the troubled state of Jammu and Kashmir the incidents of r ape,abductions,molestation and murders are quite rare.And if such incidents have taken place it is the result of the activities of militants
especially the foreign mercenaries who had indulged in large incidents of rape,abductions and murders between 1990 and 2000.Even then the number of such incidents can be counted on finger tips.One may not feel surprised if after some years Jammu and Kashmir state too witnesses increase in the incidents of rape,molestations,abductions and murders in case the problem of unemployment remained unresolved and the yawning gap between the poor and rich remained unbridged.Lack of severe penalty in case of rape or molestation or chain snatching is said to be the main reason for upsurge in such incidents.Law needs to be amended if the Government wants to see an end to this menace.Atleast find out a via media between the loose laws against such crimes in India and instant death to the criminals involved in rape and murders in the middle east
