Local guide turning away, rude shock to militants’ cadre | New techniques of mapping areas to find inroads embarked upon | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Vaibhavi Chandel JAMMU Feb 12: The novel devices and the art of tactics having embarked upon by the militants in Jammu and Kashmir may have relieved army on one hand, but on the other the maps and new exploring gadgets found in search operations can be headache for the forces. Earlier the local guides used to be their mentors helping in tracking them their ways into the interiors, but now armed forces having prevailed upon them by extending them help in kind and other alloied jobs have given a rude shock to militants’ cadre. Where the army is keeping a strict vigil on every aspect and ever small movement on the border areas, one thing which is catching the attention of the army these days is the recovery of the maps from the terrorist gunned down in various encounters. The maps of various locations of army installations and various other connective road maps to adjoining areas in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir have been recovered from the militants who were gunned down in various encounters and this certainly has perplexed the troops. Especially the winter months remain to be the peak period for infiltration, as the infiltrators make every possible effort to take advantage of the fog and so the winter months remain quite hectic for the troops deployed on the border areas. The maps which are recovered from the terrorist are believed to have been supplied by the Pakistani army. This is done generally by the Pakistani army to make the movement of the terrorists easy in the Indian territory and also to give them the detailed information about the various army installations in the area and the road maps to connecting roads to make an easy escape.
In one of the operations in Rajouri district of the Jammu region in which 16 terrorists were killed, several maps of Indian Territory were recovered from them. These terrorists had infiltrated from Pakistan and were ambushed immediately. As per Lt. Colonel Biplab Nath, defense spokesperson based in Jammu, especially during the ‘Operation Khoj’ in Rajouri district maps pertaining to Indian territory were recovered from the Pakistani ultras. These maps were detailed maps with all the basic information required. Even the area where ‘operation khoj’ took place in Rajouri district could be identified well on the map as area 4321. The map could be easily read but prior one must be having training in that. As per the defense officials, these maps were most probably provided to these terrorists by the Pakistani army or the ISI that provides arms training to them. As per the reports not only in Jammu region but the terrorists who infiltrate into the Kashmir region also carry similar maps with them. Maps were recovered from the two slain terrorists who tried to infiltrate into the Indian territory in Kupwara sector few months back. It is important to mention here that terrorists are not only making use of maps but they also GPRS (Global Positioning System) and satellite phones are recovered from them. These hi-tech gadgets are an additional boon for the terrorists as these hi-tech devices help them to facilitate their movement and communication with their guides in Pakistan as well. “The maps which have been recovered are of Pakistani survey of Indian Territory and are made available the Pakistani army. But the terrorists also carry the scanned copes of these maps which further points towards the involvement between terrorists and Pakistani army”, adds the officials.
What may be the reason, where the increased infiltration bids from the other side of border has placed the troops on tenterhooks, there only, recovery of maps and other hi-tech devices from the terrorists have further complicated their problems. No doubt, army has played a commendable role in the border areas, and public support to the militants has diminished but the use of the hi-tech devices by these terrorists has complicated the situation
