Fresh snowfall in high altitude areas of Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR Feb 12 : The high altitude areas of Kashmir valley including the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg experienced fresh snowfall, while plains were lashed by rains under the influence of western disturbance which is expected to hover over the region during next few days. The upper reaches including Gulmarg, Khilanmarg, Kangdoori, Apperwath, Sadna top and Z-Gali in north and Pahalgam and its peripherial areas including the famous cave shrine of Amarnath in south and Zojilla pass and Sonamarg in East and Yousmarg in west Kashmir experienced snow in the wee hours, official sources said. The western disturbance originating in the Arabian sea are active and under its influence moderate to heavy snowfall and rains were expected during the next five days, a spokesman of the weather office said. “Under its influence moderate to heavy rain or snowfall is expected over the state with isolated heavy falls. This may last till February 17,” the spokesman said. Kargil was the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir with night temperature falling to minus 12 degrees celsius, the spokesman said, adding the adjoining Leh town recorded a low of minus 9.8 degrees. Due to the overcast conditions and incessant rains, the night temperature showed steady improvement for the third day today with Srinagar, summer capital of the state, recording a low of 4.8 degrees, the spokesman said. He said the famous hill resort of Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for Amarnath yatra, recorded a minimum of 0.8 degrees, while Gulmarg also showed improvement with the night temperature settling at minus 4.2 degrees as against minus 10.0 degrees the previous night. However, the absence of the Sun resulted in appreciable drop in the day temperature across Kashmir. (AGENCIES)
