Mehbooba frustrated, wants Army rule in J&K: NC
PDP draws parallel between response to Egypt, J&K
2/13/2011 12:23:24 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Feb 12: Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's stepping down may finally bring some peace in the Egypt that witnessed continuous huge protes demonstrations for over one night . But the 'development' in that country has brought two traditional political rivals of J&K National Conference and PDP on warpath again with the leaders of both parties indulging in 'political bickering' of scoring points through statements. While PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti drawing a parallel chose to liken the Kashmir unrest with agitation in Egypt, NC leaders termed this as her 'frustration' and alleged she wants democracy to take back seat in J&K and Army to take over.
Opposition PDP today drew a parallel between the response to Egypt protest and 2010 summer unrest in Kashmir, saying while people in the Arab country did not face any charges from authorities there, the leadership here dubbed protestors as "drug addicts and LeT agents".
"We congratulate the people of Egypt for their victory. The role of Army there is laudable as it seemed that they were protecting their people," PDP president Mehbooba Mufti told reporters in Srinagar today.
Drawing parallels, Mehbooba said while the people in the Arab country did not face any charges, the leadership in Jammu and Kashmir has been dubbing the protesters here as "drug addicts and Lashker-e-Toiba agents".
She said people of the state were the first to respond to the "global abhorrence of violence" following the 9/11 attacks on the United States but the national leadership did not respond to the "transition".
"People of Kashmir participated in 2002 elections but not only the Central government, the national leadership also failed to respond to the change from violence to peaceful movement," she said.
She said while economic measures were needed to address the Kashmir problem, it has to be accompanied by political measures as "there are graveyards in every locality, which are a reminder of the issue."
On the other hand, without loosing any time, the NC leadership reacted quickly to what PDP said. Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar expressed their anguish and dismay at her statement hailing removal of Hosni Mubarak and imposition of Army rule in Egypt. In a statement the NC leaders said it is unfortunate that the leader of a political party Mehbooba Mufti is linking the 2010 agitation with the Egypt agitation and wants the democracy to take a back seat and the Army to take over. They said the PDP and its leadership should come out clear in the matter and clarify as to whether they want the Army to take over Jammu and Kashmir and the democracy to be shelved.
The two senior National Conference leaders said it is sad that while all right thinking people in Jammu and Kashmir want to strengthen the democracy in the state, work towards bringing peace in the state and are desirous of reducing the footprint of the security forces in the civilian areas , Mehbooba Mufti is desirous of an Army rule. They alleged her statement smacks of sheer frustration and desperation because her lust for power has so enormously overwhelmed her that she mindlessly wants the people of Jammu & Kashmir to somehow replace the present dispensation even if it is at the cost of handing over the state to the Army.
In a hard hitting statement Rather and Sagar said PDP and its leadership have always indulged in double speak and deceitful methods to grab power by bartering the interests of the people of Jammu & Kashmir and thwarting the process of democracy in their selfish motive of somehow getting hold of power in the state. They said Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was responsible for the murder of democracy in 1984 in the state and then the massacre of innocent people in 1990 when mourners in the Mirwaiz's procession were showered bullets at the instance of the then Governor Jagmohan who had the tactical support of the then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The NC stalwarts said the killing of the five Hizbul Commanders who were in the process of a dialogue with the Government of India to find a solution during the Chief Ministership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed are instances to prove that PDP and its leadership can go to any extent for the sake of being in power.
The NC leaders said Mehbooba's statement today shows her lack of concern for the welfare and the sentiments of the people of Kashmir and her sole objective is to somehow get the Omar Abdullah government removed because she and her party feel threatened by the historic initiatives being taken by the Omar led government for the development of the state and the political resolution of the Kashmir imbroglio. They said as the realization is donning on PDP that the coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah is working in close quarters with the UPA government in the Centre to find a lasting acceptable political solution to the Kashmir problem as per the aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir she is instigating the people to adopt methods which lead to an anarchical situation where the Army has to take over the reins of the state.
