Fake gun licence racket busted; Mendhar SDM, clerk figure as accused

JAMMU, Feb 13:
Busting a major fake gun licence racket, the Janipura police have arrested four persons from Koteranka in Rajouri.The alleged involvement of Mendhar SDM Mukhtar Choudhary, his clerk Khaliq Ahmad, Umar gun factory, Rajouri, Singh gun house, Shaheedi Chowk, and Suresh gun house, Shaheedi Chowk, has figured in the racket, SDPO Bakshi Nagar, DSP Shiv Kumar Chouhan said.
The racket was unearthed by police following specific inputs in this regard.
During the course of investigation, a police party led by Janipura police station SHO, SI Jaipal Sharma, which worked under Chouhan's supervision, came to know that the fake licences had allegedly been
issued from the Mendhar SDM's office.
Majority of these licences were issued to the people of Rajouri and Poonch areas. Most of them had purchased guns and were now said to be working as guards in private firms in Mumbai and other areas of the country, police sources added.
Sources said further investigation in the case led police to the arrest of four persons, who were alleged to be actively involved in the fake gun licence racket.They were identified as Chain Singh, Nasir Ahmad, Mohammad Rafiq and Subash Chander, all residents of Koteranka.Two agents -- Purshotam and Bittoo -- were absconding. Raids were being conducted by police to nab them too, the sources added.
Sources said police were trying to find out if the racket was linked to militancy also.
Several fake licences had allegedly been issued by the SDM's office, the DSP said.
He said police had seized a total of 42 fake licences and investigation in the case was still on.
Chouhan said the SDM and his clerk were likely to be picked up for questionining in a day or two.
The Janipura police had registered a case in this connection under sections 420, 467, 468 and 471 of RPC and 3/25 of Arms Act
