JAMMU, Feb 13: Two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants, including a madrassa teacher, were today apprehended by security forces after an hour-long gunbattle at Thatchu in Bhimdasa area of Gool.
Both are close associates of HM divisional commander Qari Zuber, who was shot dead by troops along with his two associates in an encounter in Harni Harnal nullah forests of Banihal, Ramban, on
February 8 last, according to police sources.
The nabbed militants were identified as Mohammad Rafiq Chandel (30), son of Mohammad Sultan of Bhimdasa, and Tariq Ahmad (20), son of Abdul Ghani of Thatchu. Before joining HM ranks on October 24 last year, Tariq taught in a madrassa at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, the sources added.
Acting on a tip-off that Tariq was to visit his house at Thatchu, a joint column of police and RR troops of Uniform Force of army laid a cordon around the area at about 4 am today.
While jawans were tightning the cordon, they picked up the suspicious movement of the two militants outside Tariq's house at about 6.30 pm. When asked to surrender, they opened fire and fled
towards the nearby forests.
Fire was returned. The exchange of fire between the two sides continued for about an hour after which the jawans raided their hideout and captured them. One AK rifle along with a magazine and 39 rounds, one Chinese pistol, its one magazine and four rounds, four handgrenades and a
radioset were recovered from them.
They were immediately whisked away to an interrogation centre in the area for their detailed questioning.
Another report said they were captured from Tariq's residence.Sources said they were involved in the killing of two TA jawans in an encounter at Gool about a month back. Chandel, a surrendered militant, had rejoined HM ranks on October 14 last year. He was closely associated with Qari and HM district
commander Ghulam Qadir.
Sources said in the operation, launched under the supervision of the DIG concerned, SP (Ramban) Anil Magotra, DSP (operations) Mushin Ahmad and Gool police station SHO, Inspector Ashiq Hussain played a major role.
