LC polls: Opposition parties’ strategy key to success on at least 2 seats…? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu: Even as it is too early to predict or foresee the outcome of polls for Legislative Council, it is a foregone conclusion that out of six seats at least four will be clinched by the ruling alliance parties- National Conference and Congress. What will be the pattern of the victory for these two seats in so far the two partners are concerned depends upon the ‘understanding’ both will have on sharing of the seats for Kashmir as well as Jammu province.
However, as for the two more seats nothing can be said for final at this moment as again this depends on the more than one factor, the main being technicalities related to issuance of the notifications for the seats in different categories. While all parties including those in opposition –PDP, BJP and even J&K Panthers party would certainly like to bag at least one seat, the polls in the Upper House like previous polls is likely to witness some ‘understanding’ between the opposition as well to enable at least two parties to garner one seat each.
In unofficial political conversations, the main opposition party PDP is claiming to be sure to win one seat from Kashmir. The electoral college consists of the 90 votes of Members of Legislative Assembly , including two nominated ones, which implies in the event of a proper contest PDP would need support of few more votes other than what strength it has of its own. It certainly will have to depend upon the support of BJP and Panthers Party. What strategy the opposition parties are going to adopt to keep the ruling allies on tenterhooks, in terms of not enabling them to get the fifth seat as well, remains to be seen.
However, observers have it to say that if opposition parties are able to play it tactfully, there are chances of ‘Rafiq Shah’ type story getting repeated. It may be mentioned Rafiq Shah of Panthers Party got elected last time on mere ‘strategically’ calculated and mutually acceptable understanding between the opposition parties. Panthers Party, is is pertinent to mention has mere three members in the Legislative Assembly. As for the ruling National Conference the choice of the candidates for all the seats is still not final. But in case of the reserved seat for Poonch, political observers say it might be a very difficult decision to make a final choice in the backdrop of the fact that party leadership has assured many considered heavyweights in the area and therefore many contenders in the race to get party nod for contest.
