Centre likely to reduce paramilitary forces in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 14: Plan of the central government to withdraw about 10, 000 paramilitary personnel from Jammu and Kashmir has been formulated on the recommendations of the state Government. Official sources said that the state government in general and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in particular have been campaigning for reduction of not only paramilitary forces but also the army. Sources said that Omar had a number of meetings with the Union Home Minister, P.Chidambaram, who took the decision of withdrawing 10, 000 paramilitary personnel after intelligence reports received by him indicated that the security scenario in the state had registered marked improvement. According to sources in the Army and Defence ministry A.K.Antony have been opposing withdrawal of troops. Reports said that Ministry of Defence would like to watch the situation in the state for another next two months and in case, it remained stable some companies of troops could be withdrawn from within the state. Ministry has indicated that there was no question of reduction of troops on LOC and the International Border. Reports said that the government would withdraw 10, 000 paramilitary personnel only after the completion of the ensuing Panchayat elections. According to these reports, the decision on withdrawing some companies of paramilitary forces was meant to motivate separatists for participating in the process of dialogue. They added that it is aimed at giving state police additional responsibilities for handling the law and order problems in the state. Reports said that the state government has sought central government's nod for allowing the state to raise another five police battalions so that the state police was in a position to tackle the situation when more companies of paramilitary forces are pulled out of Jammu and Kashmir.
