Snowfall cuts off Kashmir Valley from rest of country | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Feb 14: Kashmir Valley was cut off from rest of the country today as light to moderate snowfall disrupted normal life prompting authorities to issue a fresh warning of avalanches in the high altitude areas. While 300-km long Srinagar-Jammu national highway - the only road linking Kashmir with rest of the country - remained closed for vehicular traffic for the second day, the bad weather also forced authorities to cancel all flights to and from Srinagar international airport, official sources said. People of Srinagar and other plains woke up this morning to see a white blanket covering the surface. The snowfall continued intermittently throughout the day. Zabarwan hills overlooking the world famous Dal Lake had also turned white, adding to the beauty of the scenic Himalayan region. Sources said most parts of north Kashmir, including the famous Ski resort of Gulmarg, the major attraction for tourists visiting Kashmir during winter, and Pir Panchal ranges in south experienced heavy snowfall ranging between three inches to four feet. Reports of heavy snowfall were also received from frontier region of Ladakh, including Kargil and Drass, sources said. 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway remained blocked for vehicular traffic since November as Zojilla pass along highway attracts massive snowfall during the winter. “On the basis of inputs received from Snow Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), medium danger avalanche warning exist in snow-bound area above 2,500 meters altitude of Anantnag, Banihal, Kishtwar, Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama, Gulmarg, Naugam, Baramula, Uri, Kupwara, Tangdhar, Keran, Machhil, Bandipur, Gurez, Drass and Kargil till this evening,'' Amir Ali, who heads disaster management cell of state government, said. He said that people living in these areas are advised not to venture in steep avalanche-prone slopes till further orders. “People are also advised to clean the snow from roof top of their houses to avoid any casualty due to roof collapse,” Ali said. As there was no let up in snow and rains along the National Highway, the arterial road-remained closed for vehicular traffic for the second day.
