EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 14: Notwithstanding the tall promises made by both state and Central governments regarding their immediate rehabilitation the, Leh cloudburst victims still wait for justice as hundreds of families were forced to pass the chilly Winter shelter-less.
Soon after the cloud burst tragedy hit the Leh township in July last year killing over hundred people and rendering equal number of families shelter-less, the Government had claimed to rebuilt the Leh township prior to onset of Winter Season in 2010. But the Government failed to keep up its promise and not to speak of construction of the residential accommodations for these hapless people the Government has failed to provide the basic infrastructual facilities for the victims who accuse it of total betrayal.
According to Anil Kumar a social activist camping in Leh since the cloud burst tragedy, the promises made by both Central and state governments were totally an eye-wash. These promises, were made by none, else than the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi and AICC, general secretary Rahul Gandhi who visited the area soon after the tragedy.
The Government had promised to construct new houses for the victims prior to November last year but it later backtracked from its word and only constructed temporary prefabricated one room hutments which also san the facilities of lavatories and bathrooms, he added.
He said the people have been put to many hardships in the chilly cold of winter when the temperatures dips to minus 40 degree Celsius in Ladakh. Even the hutments are not suffice to accommodate all the victims as only 40 percent prefabricated structures have been raised, he added.
The Government has totally ignored the agriculturists whose hundreds kanals of agriculture land has been washed away, said Dr Dawa a political leader. The farmers who were totally dependent on this land are at the verge of starvation as their only source of livelihood has been snatched, he added.
He said the taxi operators, shopkeepers and other small businessmen whose business establishments and taxis were washed away in the flash floods have not been paid any compensation or relief. This led to committing of suicide by one of the shopkeepers also, he added.
Dr Dawa said these businessmen are at the verge of starvation. Even the loans of the taxi owners were not remitted till date. He said heavy damage was suffered by three townships of Leh in the cloudburst, which included Chaglamasar, Shai and Sikurbacan. Besides the agriculture land in about 100 villages was totally washed away, he added.
He said the thousands of fruit trees were also washed away in various villages of Leh and it was the main source of income to many villagers. These people were also deprived of compensation till date, he alleged.
Not only this but the Government has also failed to keep its promise to provide free education to over 100 children whose parents were washed away in flash floods, said Dolma a social activist. She said various NGOs working for rehabilitation of the cloud burst affected people in Leh have done a remarkable work than Government for rehabilitation of the victims.
Dolma said that one Cabinet Minister completely remained in Leh till the elections of Leh Autonomus Hill Development Council were held to ensure the victory of his Party and later he never bothered to look into the problems. The Government exploited the people to seek votes in the LAHDC elections and promised sky for the victims but later did nothing, she added.
These elections were held over the dead bodies of Leh people, said Dr Dawa. Those in Government exploited the sentiments of the people for seeking votes and later betrayed them, he added.
