BJP likely to discuss strategy for elections of 6 LC seats with NPP, independents | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 14: with elections for six seats Legislative Council round the corner hectic activities have begun in State BJP for fielding its candidate for one of the seats. The Party, which failed to ensure the victory of its candidate last time in 2009 after its nominee and present party chief Shamsher Singh Manhas lost to the ruling alliance candidate due to cross voting will try its best to ensure the victory of its nominee this time. To ensure the victory of its candidate the BJP will seek the support of some independents and National Panthers Party MLAs. The Party which has eleven members in State Assembly needs the support of 16 members for victory of its candidate and in case the Panthers Party which has three MLAs shows its willingness to vote for BJP candidate the party still needs the support of two independents which the sources said it can manage easily. Sources said that the Party High Command has also given instructions to state unit to go ahead with the process and hold parleys with the independent and NPP leaders to ensure the victory of its candidate. The Party has been given instructions to adopt such a strategy which will romp home its candidate at hustings and there should be no repetition of 2009 type situation, sources added. Sources said the High Command has also assured full support to the Party and the Party national leadership will also make a personnel contact with NPP leadership. To keep the collation Government under the constant check the BJP is of the opinion that victory of opposition candidates to the two seats of the Legislative council is must and the opposition should willingly join hands in this regard for strengthening of the democratic set up in the state, sources added. Sources said BJP however will not join hands with PDP in view of the Party's pro separatist policies which are inimical to the larger national interests. However the Party will not feel any hesitation in approaching the NPP and independent MLAs both from Jammu and Kashmir Valley. Moreover PDP will also not be interested in any electoral adjustment with the BJP as both parties are working in opposite direction, sources said, adding the PDP is yet tight lipped over the issue and it has not made any public disclosure about its strategy. Meanwhile the lobbying in BJP circles has started for selection of a prospective candidate. While Party president Shamsher Singh Manhas who failed to ensure his victory last time is interested to try his luck this time again some new faces are also vying to get mandate for contesting the Upper House seat this time. Sources said the names of probable candidates in BJP include former state president, Dr Nirmal Singh, ex MLA Bali Bhagat, Party general secretary Sat Sharma (CA), another general secretary Satish Sharma and Party chief spokesperson Dr Jitendra Singh. Sources said the Party president who is himself interested to contest the elections this time is under pressure to let others to fight and make a hectic lobbying to ensure the victory of the party candidate. In case president himself enters into the race his defeat will be humiliating to Party so he should stay away from the race, sources added. Some party men according to sources are of the opinion that a non controversial candidate who has a good public image could be a prospective candidate for whom the independents or NPP will also show interest to vote. In this regard the names of various party leaders are making rounds. |
