Mehbooba makes u-turn on map controversy | PDP's pictorial 'adventurism' has diplomatic implications: Cong | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Feb 14: Apparently in damage control mode, People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti today took a U-turn on what she stated in her power point presentation over Jammu and Kashmir boundary with China. She defended its truncated map of the state, parts of which were shown in China and Pakistan. "Unfortunately, a good chunk of our territory which existed before 1947 is under the illegal occupation of China. So, when PDP talks about self rule, about resolution, about opening of trade routes, we are also talking about that part, of China. The Central government should have appreciated it, rather than getting angry about it," Mufti said. Mehbooba Mufti said the Indian government was scared of China and that it should be concerned about increasing Chinese incursions and not bullied by them. "Political parties in Delhi should be glad that for the first time, a political party has shown the actual boundaries as they existed originally in 1947. We are talking about the boundaries that existed before 1947," former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said today in an interview. However, Chidambaram had reacted sternly to the party map saying the PDP had made a big mistake and if it did not correct it, the government would take action. Hitting out at Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Mufti called his remarks unfortunate. "I was expecting the home minister to appreciate me. I request him to be more concerned about incursion in Leh and separate visas for Kashmiris. They should not be bullied by China," Mufti said adding that separate Chinese visa for Kashmiris was causing them many problems. "I would request the Home Minister that he should how more concern for the incursions that China is making in our territory, especially Ladakh for the last so many years and not get bullied by China. I feel our leaders in Delhi are getting bullied by China," Mehbooba added. It may be mentioned that PDP had displayed the map on Saturday during a 'Vision on Kashmir' power-point presentation and it showed both Aksai Chin and Karakoram in China. PDP's presentation has angered both Chief Minister Omar and Congress leaders who have strongly criticized the party chief for making controversial depiction of the comments in the map. "Giving away a portion of our state as a gift is unacceptable. And to add, in a state where religion is of such importance, inducing Communist rule is a dangerous thought, which we should consider. Now, why PDP gave away a part to a Communist country is something only they can answer," Omar had said on Sunday. And today, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said, "We demand the PDP withdraw the controversial map immediately. PDP's depiction of Jammu and Kashmir in different colours is highly objectionable." "The kind of pictorial adventurism (by the PDP) has diplomatic implications," Tewari added. Tewari said: "After altering the Indian map, the PDP defended showing parts of J&K in China." |
