| Despite e-metering, state faced with dipping water levels to resurrect electricity | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU Feb 15: The harsh winters coupled with the frequent power cuts in city of temples have made life more miserable for the people here who are grappling with the problem every day
Though a relief in a way had come with the installing of e-metering in the city, with major of the area already covered under it and Electricity department generating good revenue on this account, why the government is playing the hide and seek thereafter is a question that needs to be pondered upon
Also the dipping levels of water in the rivers has surely erupted problem for the production of the electricity and this has led to the electricity problems in the state.
Because of the dipping water in the rivers and the fog surrounding, as per department only 750MW of electricity is being supplied to Srinagar and 600 MW is being supplied to Jammu region.
The overall schemes involved in the power production are producing nearly 300 MW of power; the Northern Grid is also supplying only 800 MW of power.
Even 250 MW is being overdrawn from the Northern Power grid which clearly shows that what problems are being faced. The Northern Gird has strictly informed the Jammu and Kashmir Power Development department, that if they will not stop this overdraw, the regular power will be stopped.
With the arrival of the winters the consumption of electricity has increased in the state. Now presently the total demand of the power is estimated to be 22090MW where as in contrast to it only 1400 MW power is being produced in the states.
As per the Chief Engineer because of the winters the demand of the power has increased and that is a major concern. Even as the fog gripped the city, this too badly affected the frequency of the transmission lines and this surely affected the system. To overcome this problem, the power cuts have increased in the city. Where as in few areas the power cuts are more than 10 hours, in villages the power cuts are as long as 15 hours. To compensate the power required the state is getting electricity from Chattisggarh and Chandigarh under the Banking scheme.
