| FAULTY ELECTRONIC METERS ADD TO MISERIES OF POWER DEPARTMENT, CONSUMERS | | | Jammu, November 11 A large number of electronic power metres, installed by the PDD with much fanfare two years ago, have developed major fault. Most of these metres are nonfunctional adding to the misery of power consumers. The Power Minister,Mr Nawang Rigzin Zora, has announced that all areas will be covered under electronic metre installation in order to check power pilferage. He, however, has not been informed about the problems people face on account of “mysterious paralysis in these metres.” What has compounded the distress of power consumers is that the PDD has no surplus electronic metres for replacing the rickety metres immediately. A number of power consumers have informed the PDD in writing that since the electronic metres, installed in their houses, had “fallen sick” they needed immediate replacement but to their surprise they were told that the metres could not be replaced because the stocks were limited and the Government had to meet its commitment of installing metres in areas yet uncovered under the scheme. Subash Manhas,a resident of Gandhi Nagar, told Kashmir Independent Press on Saturday that the way these electronic metres developed fault within less than a year needed to be probed by a special team of experts.” He said that he had reports that the concerned authorities had procured substandard metres after pocketing heavy commission from the company. One Tara Chand of Bakshi Nagar said “the old metre installed in his house had remained functional for more than 20 years till it was replaced by the electronic metre.” He too smelt a rat in the purchase of these electronic metres. Power consumers have requested Mr Jora either to delink the entire state from electronic metering system or ensure that faulty metres were replaced immediately that too without any cost.
