| Normal life paralysed as Gulmarg, Tangmarg observe shutdown | | | Srinagar, Nov 11 A complete shut down was observed today in Gulmarg and Tangmarg area of North Kashmir, where thousands of tourist guides and tourist trade workers staged a massive protest demonstration against the proposal of the state government to lease out prime land in the world famous tourist destination to some non-state subjects. Reports pouring in from the area revealed that normal life was paralysed in the Gulmarg and Tangmarg areas following a bandh call given by various organisations associated with tourism trade. All the shops and other business establishments remained closed, while commercial vehicles were out of the roads. Schools and other educational institutions and some government offices also suffered due to the strike call. A large number of people, mostly tourist operators and tourist’s guides, assembled outside the office of Tehsildar Tangmarg and staged a massive protest demonstration. Shouting slogans against the state government, the protestors were demanding cancellation of proposal formulated by the state government to lease out Gulmarg land to outsiders. “Gulmarg is our land and we can not allow any outsiders to snatch our source of income”, Abdul Ahad, one of the protestors told News Agency of Kashmir. He claimed that state government was trying to sell out the Kashmir land to non-locals for some vested interests. People of the area, most of whom are associated with tourist related business, have threatened to intensify their strike in case the government failed to consider their demand. “We will not allow even an inch of our land to be sold to any outsider”, Rahim a tourist guide opined. |
