BJP cautions Centre over AFSPA revocation, troops’ withdrawal | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 16: Cautioning the Government of India for ignoring the views expressed by the army chief, General V K Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday warned that any hasty decision about Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) and withdrawal of troops could offer a boost to “militant activity” while dangerously demoralising the Armed forces. In a press statement issued here, the BJP state chief spokesperson, Jitendra Singh while quoting the army chief, said that Gen Singh has in “subtle but meaningful” words suggested that the government ought to take, what the he described, as ‘holistic view’ of the situation. The BJP leader drew attention to a strong point made by Gen Singh about the AFSPA wherein the latter had said that “AFSPA was enforced with some objective and those opposing it do so for personal interest”. “Even though the number of militants operating in the state may have come down, within the past one week, operations eliminating Hizbul Mujahideen militants could be accomplished only with the support of military and para-military forces,” he remarked. Singh cautioned certain political groups and their leaders against indulging in “army bashing” to score political points even though they did not have the courage to utter a word of condemnation against militant leaders. He recalled that Gen Singh had last week also called for “ideological clarity” while taking decisions regarding Jammu and Kashmir.
