2/16/2011 11:44:44 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU Feb 16 : A leopard, which was locked in the room of a house at Drudi near Kota in Gandoh area of Bhaderwah in the wee hours of Tuesday, was captured by wildlife officials with the help of locals after about 23 hours of struggle.
It had entered the room of the house of Prabhu at Drudi at about 3 am Tuesday after wounding his uncle Hoshiyar Singh and their shepherd dog.
The dog was injured after it encountered the leopard while guarding the sheep and goats in Prabhu's courtyard. Hoshiyar was attacked after he and Prabhu had come out on hearing the constant dog bark.
It, however, entered their room after Prabhu had opened fire in the air to scare it away. Prabhu had then locked the animal inside. Though police and wildlife officials, who reached the spot soon after the matter was brought to their notice, put a big iron cage at
the room entrance and opened the doors, the leopard did not enter it. In his attempt to flee, it had even broken the kacha wall of an adjoining room.
Naib-tehsildar Major Singh, forest range officer Raghunath, forester Om Prakash, forester Lekh Raj Sharma, forest guard Mushtaq Ahmad, Gandoh police station SHO, Inspector Barkat Qureshi, local Congress leader Hukum Chand Magotra and over 2,000 people were camping outside the room till late Tuesday night.
Police sources said Hukum's PSO Jitender Singh broke the glass window of the room at about 1.30 am and scared the holed up big cat with an iron pipe.
When he constantly made noise with the pipe, the leopard fled from the room corner towards the cage. As it entered the cage, Hukum's another PSO Kikkar Singh immediately downed its shutter, the sources added, saying the whole operation was completed under the supervision of Inspector Qureshi. The captured animal was then shifted by forest officials to Kishtwar. It was likely to be released in the Kishtwar forests, the sources added.Sources said the forest and wildlife officials did not make use of the tranquiliser gun and took a long time to apprehend it because tranquilisers sometimes left adverse effect on animals. When injected, tranquilisers temporarily sedate an animal so that it may be handled, or captured safely.
Sources said there was a daily cut of electricity in Gandoh area from 8 pm to 10 pm, but the department ensured an uninterrupted power supply after the matter was brought to the notice of PDD AE Sudhir Sharma.
