Four-day training programme concludes at JU | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 17: A four-day training programme on Counseling Supportive Supervision in the field of HIV/AIDS counseling organised by Department of Psychology, University of Jammu, concluded here this afternoon at the Seminar Hall of Environmental Sciences. Training programme organised under the aegis of Saksham, a five year programme supported by Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) is aimed at increasing capacity of counselors to undertake visits as counselling supervisors to Integrating Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTC) centres set up in various hospitals in all the three regions-Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Professor R.D Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs (DAA), University of Jammu was the chief guest of the valedictory function. Dr. Arti Bakshi, Head of Department, Department of Psychology was also present at the occasion. Saksham which means "Capable" or "Self-reliant” is a unique partnership between 36 academic institutions working in close coordination with the public health system. Speaking at the occasion, Prof R. D. Sharma complimented department of Psychology for conducting this training and adding that it is only because of their commitment and ability that the psychology department has been chosen for this prestigious project. Executive director, Rural Development and You (RDY) Leh Padma Tashi who was one of the participants, while sharing his experiences, said that group discussions and PPTs were all need based. Madhu Burma, Supervisor, Department of Social Welfare also said that counselling is a very sensitive issue and in terms of HIV AIDS, it makes it extra sensitive as one has to talk about this keeping in view our religious and cultural sensitivities. She said the training programme honed their skills and now they would be able to perform better in their field activities. Dr. Arti Bakshi, Dr Arun Sharma, Medical Superintendent, Government Hospital Sarwal, Dr. Manmeet Kour, PGI Chandigarh,Dr. Chand Trehan, Capacity Building Officer, GFATM. The training was coordinated by Manju Cheema, programme assistant, GFATM Jammu, and Coral Manhas, research scholar.
