| Protest against grenade attack held | | | Tahab(Pulwama)Nov 11 Thousands of villagers from Tahab and adjoining areas today took to streets and made several attempts to march towards District Development Commissioner's office in Pulwama to demand the handover of the youth, who allegedly hurled the grenade, back to the people. The protest grew massive as people from Ananatnag, the home town of Dawoodi, poured in to join the protest. Raising sky high slogans against the administration and in favour of justice, the protesters tried to break through the heavy deployment of forces to reach Pulwama and demonstrate in front of the DDC's office. Fearing rioting and escalation in violence, police, however, stopped the protesters outside the Tahab village. The situation, though tense, was kept under control by police. At Pulwama, schools, offices and other commercial establishments remained closed in protest against the killing of innocent civilians in the grenade attack. Several political leaders including Democratic Freedom Party leader, Shabir Ahmad Shah and APHC's Agha Syed Hussain and Nayeem Ahmad Khan visited the village to express solidarity with the families of the deceased. Shah while appealing people to maintain peace and harmony and to let sectarian tension creep in, warned them that the attack could be a handiwork of agencies who want to incite sectarian tension among people of Kashmir. "The ranks of pro-independence people have always been infiltrated when the movement is at its peak," Shah said while reacting to a question about allegations that the grenade was hurled by a Kashmiri militant. Hundreds of friends and relatives, meanwhile, kept pouring in the village to express condolences to the bereaved families as the village mourned the death of five of its residents. Three of the killed belong to the same family while all the five were a part of the extended family.(KIP) |
