Army airlifts ill porter to hospital
2/18/2011 10:03:35 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 18: Despite the hostile weather conditions and a white blanket of snow covering the peaks at 13,000 ft, a porter, who had developed serious health conditions, was Friday airlifted by army to a military hospital.
Army porter Ali Mohammad Mian (30) of Lachhipura was at a forward post at a height of 13,000 ft along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri Sector. Wednesday last, he developed a serious medical problem and was in excruciating pain due to blockage of the urinary canal, army sources said.
The post had 35 ft snow and was avalanche prone, thus making hisvacuation by foot a virtual impossibility. His medical condition was being monitored continuously by army doctors. His evacuation was, however, severely hampered due to terrain, weather conditions and poor visibility, the sources added. His condition further deteriorated last night, despite best available medical treatment at the post. Today, Chinar Corps flew a ‘casualty evacuation mission’ to evacuate him.
Sources said the soft snow conditions and operating at ‘man-machine optimal levels’ made this mission difficult.
Due to prevailing ground conditions, landing the helicopter was ruled out. The pilots, however, at grave risk to their lives resorted to ‘very low hover’, above the ground in harsh wind conditions, while the troops present there physically lifted the ailing porter into the helicopter. He was now recuperating and out of danger at army hospital in BB cantonment, the sources added. Sources said this evacuation by army clearly illustrated the bond between awam and jawan and further endorsed the army stand that 2011 was the 'Year of the Awam'.
A precious life was saved because of the brave effort of the pilots, continued monitoring of his condition for over two days by army doctors and the tenacity of the troops in ensuring that Ali was safely evacuated, the sources added.
