I hurled grenade for thousand rupees: captured youth
11/11/2006 11:54:44 PM
Tahab(Pulwama),Nov11
Army today presented a youth, reportedly captured by locals at Tahab village after he threw a grenade towards a Friday congregation, before media at Pulwama. The youth was taken into possession by the 55 Rashtriya Rifles late last evening after hours of persuasion as villagers were reluctant to hand him over to the authorities.

The youth, Ghulam Nabi Mir, who spoke to the media at 55 RR camp in Pulwama, said that he had been lured to carry out the operation by a Hizb militant whom he knew for some time. "He paid me one thousand rupees to kill Dawoodi," said the youth as he struggles to stand on his legs due to fear and torture.

The youth was reportedly chased by villagers after allegedly hurling the grenade at Tahab and was subsequently captured, ruthlessly beaten and even attempts were made by the outraged mob to put him to flames. "They (People) tried to put me on fire," said the youth while adding that army saved him from getting killed.

Mir said that he received one thousand rupees to eliminate Dawoodi from a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant, Gulzar Mir alias Nika. "I was told to kill Dawoodi," said Mir. "But I attacked him at a crowded place and other people were killed. It was a mistake, forgive me," muttered Mir.

"I first did not accept to throw the grenade but they forced me and then paid me one thousand rupees for the attack," said Mir.

Brigadier G S Katoch, meanwhile, told media persons that the captured youth was the nephew of Hizb Battalion Commander, Abdul Rashid ganaie alias Ishfaq and this facilitated his involvement in the act.

"The villagers were not ready to handover the youth," Katoch said. "They (People) wanted to kill him (Mir) as Anger was high on their minds. So they denied to hand him over," said the Brigadier.

The Army had to cordon off the whole village and employ the services of a local officer in getting the possession of the youth, Katoch said. "We persuaded them not to take the law in their own hands and they finally yielded. The boy was finally taken into custody at around 9:30 PM," he said.

The brigadier further said that Mir shall be handed over to police as law demands handing over within twenty four hours and said that he had already spoken to SP Pulwama in this regard.

A visibly tortured, Mir, however, spoke with little clarity uttering numb voices at frequent pauses. Bare footed and dressed in dingy clothes, Mir said that he knew the militant Nika since the days he was running a shop in Littar village in the area. "Nika is a mujahid (the common word for a militant in Kashmir) from HM and he gave me the grenade to kill Dawoodi," admitted Mir.
