Friendship Cup: Governor XI, Simula win ties

JAMMU, Feb 19: Governor XI and Simula Sports Club won their respective matches on the inaugural day of the Friendship Cup Cricket Tournament, organised by Jammu and Kashmir Police at University of Jammu grounds, here today.
In the first match of the day, Governor XI trounced Chief Minister’s XI by margin of 42 runs.
Earlier, batting first, Governor XI set a target of 143 runs for the loss of six wickets in allotted 20 overs, which in reply, CM XI could not chase and conceded at 101 for nine in 19 overs.
Munish was top scorer with 31 runs while Arif and Shamshudin contributed 25 and 17 runs respectively. From CM XI, Bafar, Bal Krishan, Parveen and Kewel took one wicket each.
Batting second, CM XI conceded the defeat finding the target difficult at 101 for nine in 19 overs. Anil Gupta was main scorer with 20 runs, followed by Amit and Kapil, who added 17 runs each. Shamshudin bagged two wickets from Governor XI while Anoop, Nasir and Kuldeep shared apiece each.
In another match of the day, Simula XI trounced Chief Secretary (CS) XI by a big margin of 58 runs. Batting first, Simula set a target of 154 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Nasir made maximum 61 runs, followed by Sameer (24) and Gulzar (18). From CS XI, Babar and Dar took two wickets each.
In reply, CS XI failed to attain the goal and bowled out for 95 runs. Asif was top scorer with 28 runs while Mushtaq contributed 17. From Simula XI, Thapa remained most successful bowler with four wickets.
Earlier, the tournament was declared open by Director General of Police (DGP), Kuldeep Khoda, who was chief guest. He played a couple of deliveries to formally inaugurate the event and also interacted with all 12 participating teams.
The distinguished gathering was welcomed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu, Dilbag Singh.
