Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 19: Even as New Delhi’s nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir have urged the government of India to release prisoners as a goodwill gesture, the authorities have launched a `Jail Bharo Aandolan’ to prevent another agitation this summer. According to reports 4294 persons have been taken into custody till date. And with more arrests in the offing, the interlocutors will have to do a lot of explaining during their meetings with the separatists if at all they accept their invite.

According to informed sources 4294 suspected stone pelters have been arrested across Kashmir. Public Safety Act (PSA) has been slapped on 195 persons. They have been sent to various jails in the state.

Till December 31 last year, 3830 suspected stone pelters were arrested. During the past two months 614 arrests have been effected, sources said.

Sources said most of the arrests have been effected in the city of Srinagar followed by Baramulla with 404 arrests. “Anantnag has 348 and Budgam 342 arrests. Pulwama, Kupwara and Kulgam have 319, 273 and 243 arrests respectively. Similarly 159 youth from Bandipora and 128 from Shopian have been taken into custody. Surprisingly the number of arrests effected in Sopore is less than Awantipora town which remained relatively calm during the last year’s agitation. Sopore is considered a ` hot bed of militancy’ and the number of arrested youth has gone up to 151. Awantipora is ahead with 164 arrests”, sources said.

Bail has been granted in hundreds of cases but only 47 of them have been released. Fifty-three persons from Srinagar have been detained under PSA, sources said.

The spree of arrests has evoked severe reaction from political and social circles. The police have been accused of launching a `jail bharo aandolan’ (Fill jails campaign). Long queues of aggrieved parents are seen outside police stations in Srinagar. “The police do not honour the bail orders. Our children are implicated in false cases. We have no where to go”, said a parent. A group of aggrieved parents sought personal intervention of the Chief Minister.
