NC working committee meet reaffirms stand on autonomy Favours dialogue with separatists, Pak, | Thrust on strengthening coalition | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 19 : Close on heels of its major ally Congress discussed the contours of the report prepared by the Interlocutors with Union Home Minister ,the ruling National Conference today reaffirmed its stand on the autonomy contending it was the only alternative to establish lasting peace in the state.The party leadership also resolved will take on the "anti-peace" forces in Jammu and Kashmir and push for a result-oriented India-Pakistan dialogue while simultaneously favoring dialogue with the separatists. In its Working Committee meeting held here today the leadership is also believed to have underlined the need to remove all differences with alliance partner Congress on all issues and move forward as a ‘united coalition’ while making efforts to strengthen it.On matters like Panchayat polls and development agenda, the NC high Command laid thrust on taking people oriented issues forward along with Congress, it being the major ruling partner, sources said. However, the leadership discussed the issue of Panchayat polls threadbare and asked the senior leaders to follow the ‘directions’ in consonance with the interests of the party. Central Working Committee met after months which was presided by party president and union New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. A unanimous call was given for "strengthening the party and taking on all those who have worked or continue to work against peace in the state", the sources said. In the meeting attended by over 30 members, all seasoned leaders, Dr Farooq Abdullah conveyed that NC being premier political party of the state must seize the opportunity that has re-appeared with India and Pakistan resuming their dialogue and make ‘efforts to push the process forward’, said the sources. His stress was on putting the NC as a protagonist of dialogue and peace and exposing the "designs of those who have been disturbing peace in Kashmir", the sources added.
Later briefing the media Dr Farooq Abdullah said " NC will continue to plead for sustained dialogue between the two countries and also with Delhi holding substantive talks with all sections in Kashmir, including those who of late have not been responding to the invitation for talks “We are for the interaction of the interlocutors with the separatists so that their view point is also registered”, he said and expressed the hope that the recommendations of the interlocutors would be presented in the Parliament by the Union Government for the discussion”, Dr Abdullah said.
Dr. Farooq said that National Conference Central Working Committee decided to support the genuine candidates in Panchayat elections and help creating an effective Panchayat Raj System in the state. He said that National Conference would work for larger participation of voters in the election to strengthen democratic institutions in the state to bring in accountability and transparency in government functioning and governance at grass roots. He said NC Legislative party will meet on February 25 to chark out the course of line and strategy for the budget session of Assembly commencing on Feb 28.
Ruling out division of the state on regional lines, the Union minister said the state would be one entity and Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir will be one unit. Dr Abdullah also said there is no question of rotation of chief ministership from his party to coalition partner Congress after 3 years.
He said there had been speculation for quite some time that "there is going to be a change of guard and after three years power will go to the other (Congress) side".
