`New Delhi, Interlocutors pursuing different goals’ Strike on Feb 22 against ban on Geelani

Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 20: New Delhi’s nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir and the Union Home Ministry seem to pursue diverse goals. Only yesterday the interlocutors invited Hurriyat (G) chairman for interaction with them and today the elderly leader was banned from leaving Delhi by the police.
The separatist conglomerate had not out rightly rejected the invitation from the Interlocutors. A spokesman of the amalgam said last evening that the decision in this regard shall be taken when Geelani returns from New Delhi.
Geelani it may be mentioned is currently in New Delhi for treatment. He was scheduled to arrive in the summer capital on February 22. Geelani’s spokesman while confirming the ban on Geelani said a police officer of Delhi police informed him in writing at his Malvia Nagar residence that he could not move out of the union capital.
The separatist amalgam has taken strong note of the ban on their leader. An emergency meeting of the Shoura (Central Council) was held this evening to discuss the development. The conglomerate has called for state wide strike on February 22 to protest restrictions on movement of the elderly leader.
Giving details of the meeting, the Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akber said: “New Delhi has double standards. Invitation for talks and restrictions on movement cannot go together. Such machinations may have a serious bearing on the ongoing process which has been entrusted to interlocutors”, he said.
Interestingly one of the interlocutors, MM Ansari today said the Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram was seriously working for permanent resolution of Kashmir dispute.
Restrictions on Geelani also reflect that the union government was not taking the interlocutors seriously. According to reports, the interlocutors have urged the government of India to release political prisoners as a good will gesture.
The Delhi police have registered a case of sedition against Geelani and others. However, his arrest has not been effected till date. According to sources, the order came in the backdrop of FIR registered against Geelani and Writer Arundhati Roy for their “anti India” speech in a seminar in Delhi last year. The FIR was registered following direction of a court on a petition filed by one Sushil Pandit. The other accused in the cae are Dr Sheikh Showkat Husain, Maoist ideologue Varvara Rao.
