Chowki Choura unacceptable as block: Kathar, Kyur people
2/21/2011 12:10:39 AM

KUNAL SHRIVATSA

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 20:

The purported move of the government to shift Kathar and Kyur panchayats of block Akhnoor to the new proposed block of Chowki Choura is being strongly resented by the inhabitants of these areas.
Criticizing the decision, a large number of inhabitants of 15 villages falling under Kathar and Kyur said that the decision is totally unacceptable to them.
It is near impossible for them to reach Chowki Choura as there is no direct connectivity between the two panchayats and the proposed new block, the locals said “If our panchayats are added with Chowki Choura, we have to tread 20 kms that too in the absence of a link road or track. It is only
possible to reach there through a Nullah,” former Sarpanch Kathar Panchayat Hari Ram said
The problem of Kathar and Kyur is not only the direct approach or link with Chowki Choura, it is the distance which is also a cause of big concern and worry for most of the residents of these villages.
“If we have to visit new block from our places on a bus or mini bus then we first have to cover a distance of about 30 Kms up to Akhnoor then further 25 to 30 Kms to reach Chowki Choura that means we have to travel at least 110 kms to be back at our villages.” Kewal Krisahn, a
social worker, said
The locals of Kathar and Kyur panchayats also apprehend various other problems in view of the proposed move of the administration to transfer two panchayats to the new block of Chowki Choura including that of getting an important document at block level which presently
they are getting easily from Akhnoor due to its near location from their villages.
“The shifting of panchayats to Chowki Choura means that in case of getting some document from block pertaining to several matters including clearance of Indira Awas Yojna cases, MNREGA cases etc we
have to go through an uphill task to visit Choura, “Kathar Lambardar Des Raj said.
A majority of residents of Kathar and Kyur panchayats vociferously demand that there areas should remain with Akhnoor and that they would not accept Chowki Choura as their block at any cost, come what may.
