Retreat from autonomy not possible: Beg | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 21: Stating that National Conference will never abandon its demand for greater autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir, senior leader and Member Parliament Dr. Mehboob Beg claimed that majority of people in Jammu and Kashmir are not happy with political status-quo. He said that National Conference will never abandon its demand for restoration of political autonomy guaranteed to the state under article 370 of Indian Constitution and Delhi agreement of 1952. “I made a fervent appeal to the political parties in the last session of parliament not to confuse people of the country by dubbing us as secessionists. We demand what has been snatched from us by government of India” Beg said. He added that some political parties especially Sang-Parivar has launched vicious campaign against people of Jammu and Kashmir. He stressed that people in the country should know that ours is the only Muslim majority state which negotiated its relationship with Union of India under special circumstances on certain conditions with fully autonomous Jammu and Kashmir. “That special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been eroded by successive governments and our demand is complete restoration of special status which the state was enjoying under Delhi-Agreement of 1952,” Beg said. When asked whether NC was ready to abandon its demand for autonomy in the larger national interest if Centre wants to accommodate view-point of separatists in the constitutional frame-work, Beg replied in negative saying that the retreat is out of question. “See this has been our political stand all along, we can’t abandon it, yes, if broader consensus emerges out of autonomy, we are ready to accept,” Beg said adding that the we are committed to our stand and nobody could stop us from raising the issue again and again as we believe in it, it is our political bible. Regarding the voices being raised against the autonomy, Beg said “in democracy every body has right to express his views, the decision, however, lies with the majority vote and the majority in Jammu and Kashmir is not happy with the status-quo. You can’t go for a referendum from village to village’ the senior NC leader Said alleging that a conspiracy is being hatched by forces inimical to the unity an integrity of the state to create confusion among the people by dividing them on ethno-religious and regional lines. In a veiled attack on opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Mehboob Beg said that some forces in the state believe in slogan mongering and once the situation in Kashmir takes some ugly turn, they fish in the troubled waters forgetting their agenda of self rule and healing touch policy.
