Separatists not inclined to participate in Panchayat poll
2/21/2011 9:42:34 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Jammu, Feb 21:- Will the separatists participate in the ensuing Panchayat elections in order to demonstrate their strength and support of people in the Kashmir valley ?This question has assumed interest after the Government of India and the interlocutors have shown their eagerness to reopen the channels of dialogue with them.

Indications from the separatist camp are that they are not willing to enter the poll fray. A senor Hurriyat Conference leader said that "if we take part in the Panchayat elections we will be butchered by people."Explaining it he said that people would be enraged on the ground that "we started the freedom struggle and even after the killing of over 80,000 people we have decided to take part in the Panchayat poll."

He said people would ask "us whether the struggle was launched simply to participate in the Panchyat poll. "The separatists do not have any plan to repeat the 1987 mistake when the then Muslim United Front took part in the Assembly elections in which they won forty five seats. They do not even dare to field proxy candidates on the plea that such a step would prove counter productive.

In support of this contention the separatists refer to Sajjad Lone who had fielded proxy candidates in Kupwara district in 2002 Assembly poll but could not make any major dent.It was because of that mistake that he lost the Assembly election later.

Another Huriyat leader said that "we are for dialogue so that the issue of Kashmir was settled. Once the issue was settled we will have no problem in contesting the elections,” he added.

However, some mainstream political leaders say that separatists have been avoiding elections because they are not sure of any victory. They said these separatists have been able to build their image as representatives of people, which they are not, and this image may get shattered if they contest any election and lose the battle.
