`It is a better demand than restoration of autonomy' | Transfer of power projects to state | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 21: The National Conference in its February 19 meeting resolved to continue its fight for restoration of autonomy to the state. The outcome of the meeting shocked the saner elements especially in Kashmir. They were expecting something tangible but, according to them, the party resorted to rhetoric. By now, it has become almost clear that nobody in Jammu region needs autonomy. Of course there are some feeble voices here and there but the people of the region, by and large, do not see `restoration of autonomy' as a solution to the vexed problem. On the contrary saner elements in the region believe that autonomy and self rule may ultimately result in balkanization of the state. Given the composition of population in the region, this contention cannot be rejected on the face of it. There is no denying the fact that the population of Ladakh is less than the population of Batmaloo area of Srinagar city but that cannot be a justification for imposing a `roadmap' on them in the name of permanent solution. For the time being, Ladakah is happy with what it has got. They have made it clear repeatedly that the wet desert needs Azadi (Freedom) from Kashmir. The Kashmiris simply hate the word autonomy. This is a harsh reality which the National Conference must accept sooner than later. What do the people of state, therefore, want? Notwithstanding a movement for Azadi in Kashmir or voices for a separate state in Jammu, the people in Ladakah, Kashmir and Jammu need power. Omar Abdullah has been pampered by the Union Home Ministry for the past two years. But his repeated requests for transfer of power projects to the state have been turned down the recommendations of the Rangarajan Committee notwithstanding. This reflects the influence he exercises in New Delhi. Reports suggest that the union Power Ministry has repeatedly urged the state government not to insist on transfer of the power projects. Omar has been told such demands will encourage other states to come forward with similar demands. Autonomy demand has not evoked the desired support from any region of the state. But, the demand for transfer of power projects shall not only evoke massive support but will bring the people of the state closer. |
