Parroting issue makes no impact | Army still in occupation of land belonging to JU | | Mishu Gupta Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 22: Despite Jammu university officials parroting for the last 17 years that issue of retrieving land belonging to it which is in the possession of army has been taken up at the highest level, nothing has moved. More ironical is the fact that those manning the administration do not feel shy of repeating the same odd statement of land being returned to Jammu University soon. In a press conference held in the University guest house, Registrar Jammu University Prof P. S.Pathania alongwith Dean Academic Affairs R.D.Sharma had nothing new to say. When asked, Registrar Jammu University (JU) Prof. P.S.Pathania said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already directed Divisional Commissioner Jammu Pawan Kotwal to ensure that the land is vacated at the earliest. “We had vociferously taken up the matter of land being occupied by army in recently held Jammu University Council meeting chaired by Governor N.N.Vohra,” added Pathania. He maintained that Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, who is Pro-Chancellor of Jammu University, is personally looking after the issue. “University can only take up the issue at the right quarters but decision in this regard would be taken at higher level,” he remarked. He was responding to query about the need for expansion of Jammu University campus following lack of infrastructure and facility in the students. Ironically, the University has recently decided to convert one of the floors of Central Library into Examination Hall. The move faced sharp criticism from the students who alleged that it would adversely affect students especially those coming to the Central Library for preparation of competitive exams. Dean Academic Affairs (DAA), Prof R D Sharma cited the ‘lack of space’ on the campus as the main reason for converting one floor of Library into Examination Hall. It needs to be mentioned here that the matter has been pending for the past several years. The only effort to get the land vacated was made by former Governor Garish Chander Saxena and the former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah. Both had approached Defence Minister for intervention so that the land, used as a transit camp for troops, could be handed over to Jammu University for carrying out several expansion programmes. Later, Army authorities had assured another ex-Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that by the beginning of 2004, area would be cleared of the Army occupation. State government had then even directed the Revenue authorities to allot suitable land to the Army for setting up a transit camp near Bhatindi. Army had expressed their preparedness to vacate school buildings, sheds in industrial areas, and some huts belonging to the tourism department, which had been occupied by the security forces, provided alternative accommodation was made available where the security personnel could be lodged. State government had then informed Army authorities that since readymade houses, at Belicharana would be allotted to the security forces.
