| Don’t click e-governance button: J&K govt is topsy-turvy | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 22: If you are looking out for information regarding Jammu & Kashmir state or want to go through the profile of the state’s Chief Minister and Ministers with the click of a mouse on official portals of the government, then a big disappointment and displeasure is waiting for you. Even though it is the age of information technology where minute turn of events are disseminated with the blink of an eye, the official websites of J&K government fail to inform the state’s internet users and for that matter of the other parts of the country as well as abroad. Astonishingly, the official portal of the state ‘www.jammukashmir.nic.in’ is out of order for some time now while the website of General Administration Department (GAD) ‘www.jkgad.nic.in’ does not have a brief introduction of state’s CM, Deputy Chief Minister and Ministers which is rather baffling for those who want to know the details of their rulers. Only the Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports RS Chib’s profile is prominently displayed in the list of Council of Ministers on the webpage of GAD ‘www.jkgad.nic.in’ that too with every detail of his past and present. Maybe Chib’s profile got stuck on the webpage ‘inadvertently’ otherwise there would have been a blank space against his photograph like several others. If the missing profiles of CM and his cabinet colleagues is not enough, there are some Ministers whose photographs are also not shown. Perhaps the persons at the helm of affairs at GAD and its website feel that except RS Chib none including CM, Dy CM and other Ministers have a ‘suitable’ profile to be put on view on the net. Now to talk of the website of Jammu Kashmir government, probably is the only official website of a state in the country, which more than providing information to the users remain out of order every now and then,. For the last five days i.e. from February 18 till the filing of this report this scribe is repeatedly clicking the official portal of the state ‘www.jammukashmir.nic.in’ and every time a message is appearing on the screen “Under Construction”. It is only the account of the last five days perhaps this website is undergoing ‘treatment’ since long. The flash on the computer screen reminds one a sign board along an under construction road or building which can take time to complete but an official website which is not less than a document showcasing state’s administration and other vital aspects can not remain in limbo for so long in this fast paced world of communication. It is worthwhile to mention here that the Early Times in its December 7, 2010 issue has carried out a similar story wherein it was pointed out that website ‘www.jammukashmir.nic.in’ is out of bounds for the net subscribers as it had encountered some problem. The last line of the story reads ‘it was off the net at least till 8.30 pm when this report was filed’. The ‘tech savvy’ Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who frequently ‘Tweets’ and knows the power of internet should take notice of the ‘half information’ or ‘no information’ being supplied on the official web portals as these are vital organs of the state government machinery which keeps the people of the state updated of what’s happening new around them.
