Timber smugglers felling trees, looting state exchequer | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Sahil Suhail ANANTNAG, Feb 23: Timber smugglers and their accomplices are felling tress in khiram comportment no. 6 in broad daylight despite vehement claims of forest officials claim that situation is under control. Timber smugglers under a well planned strategy are busy in illegal felling of trees in Khiram Sirhama, a dense forest belt of Bijbehara. Sources said that smugglers after cutting down the trees and even uprooting the stems to ensure that no trace is left. They added that restricted movement of forest guards and other officials is adding to the ease with which the trees are being cut. According to officials, timer smuggling has assumed the shape of an illegal but organized trade in the area and is increasing in Khiram area especially in comportment number 6. They added that Achedar forest is the worst hit. He asserted that increase in construction works near the forest areas is also believed to have fuelled demand of illicit timber. Locals blame “political intervention” for lack of action against the smugglers. . Meanwhile, while admitting that illegal felling of trees and smuggling has increased, an official said that a team has been sent to forest area for reporting damage. However, he affirmed that situation has now been brought under control.
