Forest minister calls for tightening noose around timber smugglers | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Feb 23: Forest department has distributed 8.13 lakh cft of timber among the consumers of Kashmir division till ending January this year and earned revenue of Rs. 18 crore. Department has also provided 1.25 lakh quintals of fire wood to various Mosques in the valley during winter season, besides providing 42000 cft of timber to Education Department for construction of school building during the same period. This information was given at a high level meeting of forest department officers held under the chairmanship of Minister of State for Forests, Shabir Khan, here today. Meeting was informed that 2.80 lakhs plants would be planted in 834 hectares of forest land in Kashmir division during forth coming plantation season. It was further told that an amount of Rs. 1.90 crore is being utilized on soil conservation erosion works during current fiscal. During meeting, division wise progress of all forest wings was reviewed. Speaking on the occasion, Minister exhorted upon the officers to work with dedication and honesty to expand and conserve the Green Gold of the State. He stressed for timely extraction of timber and its distribution to the consumers of the valley. He directed concerned authorities to ensure timely completion of all CAMPA projects. Minister was apprised that Social Forestry Department has set a target of planting 10.40 lakh plants on 962 hectares of land during the coming plantation season and it would also distribute 50 thousands plants to the farmers of the valley on nominal cost. Chief Conservative Forests, Kashmir, Director Soil Conservation, Conservators and DFOs of all the departments and senior officers of other forest wings attended the meeting.
