10 grenades recovered from railway complex, accused "identified" | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 23: An alert railway police patrol today averted a possible tragedy by laying hands on an abandoned bag which contained 10 highly explosive grenades, The accused, who had dropped the bag, was also said to have been identified by police with the help of a close circuit television (CCTV) camera. Railway police SSP Raghubir Singh told a press conference that the bag was found hidden near an ATM, about 20 ft short of the X-ray machine installed at the platform entrance to scan luggage and other belongings of passengers. He said a railway police surveillance squad noticed the suspicious bag lying outside the ATM during routine patrolling. It seemed that apprehensive of being caught with the haul while passing through the X-ray machine, the accused had abandoned the bag, the SSP added. He said search of the bag led the surveillance team to the recovery of 10 grenades. The grenades, which carried the GRE 90 MK3 mark, would be sent to laboratory for examination. Raghubir said vigil was further stepped up at the platform and along the track after the recovery of grenades.Police sources said the railway police had identified with the help of a CCTV camera the man who had abandoned the grenades. Efforts were being made to take him into custody, the sources added. Sources said it was being ascertained if some army jawan had stolen the grenades from his unit to take them home. On May 28 last year, a bag containing five magazines and explosive material was recovered from the railway station. It allegedly belonged to sepoy Manpreet Singh. On October 7 last year, Subedar Kul Bahadur Rana of 12 Gorkha Rifles was allegedly caught with three grenades, 12 gelatine sticks and other explosive items.
