FDR protest against rising corruption | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Feb 24:Forum for Democratic Rights (FDR) on Thursday organised a protest rally against rising corruption. The march, joined in by several activists, including RTI activists, prominent citizens and students, started from Trikuta Nagar main market and ended at Gole market. Raising slogans against corruption and deeming it an anti-national act, the rally marched through the Nanak Nagar market. Protesters were carrying placards saying that ‘Corruption is the root cause of human rights violation and deprivation’, Inflation, price rise is off-shoot of corruption’, ‘Strengthen RTI, protect RTI activists’, ‘Revive SAC.’ The procession culminated at Gole Market where several FDR members and prominent citizens addressed the gathering and raised several demands. The FDR called upon the state government and the Centre to strengthen RTI and protect RTI activists. It also called for revival of State Accountability Commission in its undiluted form. They also demanded a similar Commission to probe allegations of corruption at the national level, so that cases could be investigated fairly and independently, without any political interference and influence. They said that mechanisms should be introduced so that the corrupt people are punished. Rising inflation, affecting lives of everybody, and news of scandals like Commonwealth Games and 2G Spectrum have brought our focus to this menace of corruption that lies at the root of most problems in India. The politician-bureaucrat-businessman-media nexus stands so bitterly exposed, the speakers at the rally said. The speakers maintained that a corrupt polity has not only affected people of this country monetarily, it has also been the root cause of lack of development and denial of basic human amenities. It also perpetuates a polity that tends to crush civil liberties and aid and abet human rights violations. Lack of accountability in the name of ‘security concerns’ has led to innocents being implicated in false cases of terrorism or killed in fake encounters and custodial killings, they said. The speakers maintained that corruption must be fought top to bottom. They also called for a public awakening so that the government is forced to introduce the much needed reforms to tackle corruption. Forum for Democratic Rights president Prof. Zahur-u-Din, former Jammu Mayor Narinder Singh, Daljeet Singh, Anuradha Bhasin, Dheeraj and Kulbhushan Singh addressed the gathering at Gole market.
