| Aijaz inaugurates Urdu Writers Conference | | Expresses concern over the shrinking popularity of Urdu | |
JAMMU | NOV 11 Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education, Aijaz Ahmed Khan inaugurated a one-day “All J&K Urdu Writers Conference” at JU this morning. The conference was organized by the Department of Urdu, JU in collaboration with Centre for Professional Studies and All India Urdu Teachers Association to commemorate the death anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Renowned Urdu scholar, Prof. Zahuruddin was presiding over the conference. In his inaugural address, Minister expressed concern over the shrinking popularity of Urdu language in the state as; its role seems to be restricted only to the Police Stations, Courts and Revenue offices. He emphasized upon the scholars of Urdu to come forward and work collectively for the sustainable development of the language. He also stressed upon the organizing members of the conference to put forth the recommendations of the conference before the state government for corrective measures to popularize the language. Recounting the efforts of government towards the popularization of Urdu, Aijaz said that Cultural Academy has published several books in Urdu for the promotion of Urdu. Not only this, a full-fledged Urdu channel has also been launched by Doordarshan, he added. Meanwhile, he assured full cooperation of implementing the recommendations of the conference for the popularization of the language. During the conference, a paper reading session was held in which various Urdu writers belonging to different areas of the state highlighted the present position of Urdu in various parts of the state. A “Mushaira” was also held in which number of poets participated. Dr. Mohd Rayaz and Dr. Zia-ud-din conducted the proceedings of the conference. Earlier, Dr. Shohab Inayat Malik, Director Centre for Professional Studies delivered the keynote address. Prof. Zahuruddin also spoke on the occasion.
