SMVDU hosts three international seminars | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 24: In keeping with its tradition of distinguished academic excellence, SMVD University has hosted a three day International Seminar organized by the School of Philosophy and Culture on the theme “Culture, Myth and Knowledge”. Chief Guest of the inaugural function was vice-chancellor SMVDU Prof. R.N.K. Bamezai. In his presidential remarks Prof. Bamezai applauded school for this initiative and commented on the contemporary relevance of the topic. According to him flanked on one side by culture which sustains it and on the other side knowledge, scientific in particular, that claims to puncture it, study of myth becomes more pertinent as science also generates its own myths. He expressed hope that the intense deliberations during the course of the seminar would be a substantial addition to this field. Dean College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Director School of Philosophy and Culture Prof R.S. Mishra informed the audience that this was the second international seminar being organized by the school in a short span of four years of its existence. Inauguration was attended by an elite gathering including distinguished personalities of the civil society like Prof. Balraj Puri, Prof. Ved Kumari Ghai, Prof. Shiv Nirmohi, Nilamber Dev Sharma. Delegates from all across India and abroad added to the intellectual ambience of the seminar. The inaugural was followed by the first academic session in which Robert. A. Segal, Professor of Religious Studies, University of Aberdeen, UK traced the various theories of myth right from the nineteenth century to the twenty-first and also discussed how the present day film stars have attained an almost divine status vis-à-vis their fans. Dr. Anil K. Tiwari, Seminar coordinator conducted the proceedings.
