Tackling protests | JK police to train 5000 Cops before summer | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Feb 26: Jammu and Kashmir police intends to train five thousand police men in handling non-lethal weapons for better crowd management before start of summer. This was disclosed by the Police Chief, Kuldeep Khoda here today. Interacting with the media persons at the training centre of the armed police in Sunjwan, Khoda said, "towards the end of March this year we will be able to complete training of more than 5000 of our jawans in the use of non lethal weapons". "We are imparting separate training to women force as well, Khuda added claiming that to control the women protesters on the streets of Kashmir valley we need trained force. Kashmir valley witnessed massive protests last summer which left around 114 persons dead. Giving details of the training programme, Khuda said the training is being conducted in a focused manner. "We are training our men and women in the use of not only 'lathis' but also the use of less lethal and non lethal weapons to minimise the loss of life and property of the civilians. He said we have procured hand help tear smoke shells, plastic bullets and rubber bullets to control the angry mob and soon we will procure more such items for better crowd anagement. He said separate training programms are presently underway at both Jammu and Srinagar. He said the civic action plan of the state police has helped them to reach out to the disgruntled youth of the state. The youth clubs set up at the police station levels have helped us in winning hearts and minds of the youth who had gone astray. He said the state police would be starting de- addiction centres in Sopore and Baramulla areas to bring back the youth in the mainstream. Senior police officer including ADG Law and Order K Rajendra, IG Armed Ravinder Kotwal, Principal of the traning school MA Khan, Danish Rana and several others were also present on the occasion.
