| Ex servicemen for low excise and sales tax on CSD items | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Feb 26:-Ex servicemen in Jammu and Kashmir have urged the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather, to reduce excise and sales tax on all CSD items on the plea that the basic purpose of the CSD facilities were being defeated by yearly hike in excise and sales tax.
Number of retired soldiers and those belonging to the BSF said that "during the last six years excise and sales tax on all canteen items had made these CSD items more costly than those being sold from other defense canteens in rest of the country."
A retired Subedar major, who wished to remain anonymous, said that a bottle of IMFL was being sold at defence canteens in Jammu and Kashmir at prices higher than the market price in Punjab and Haryana. He said he had seen some of his colleagues smuggling liquor from Punjab during their frequent trips to the neighboring state.
Another ex-serviceman, who is settled in R.S.Pora area, said that other items including electric and electronic gadgets were being sold at higher rates in the CSD's after the state Government had hiked sales tax on a number of occasions in the past.
These ex servicemen have appealed to the Finance Minister to keep in mind meager resoures of "people in our category" and as such reduce sales tax and excise on canteen items. They said that by increasing excise and sales tax the Government was to gain Rs.five to R s.10 crores and this was a small amount when compared to the service both ex servicemen and in service personnel had and were rendering to the border state.
They suggested to the Finance Minister to ensure strict implementation of his oft repeated austerity measures and once it was done the Government could save around Rs.50 crores a year that was spent on fuel for cars of ministers and bureaucrats, on purchase of furniture and furnishings for the Government offices and ministerial bunglows.
The ex servicemen have suggested to the Finance Minister to place a five-year moratorium on hike in the monthly emoluments of ministers and legislators and instead release the arrears of the sixth pay commission in favour of the state employees.
