Hectic activity in ruling camps as contenders lobby hard for cabinet, LC berths
2/27/2011 12:30:27 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Feb 26: Even as the coalition government is pre occupied with the budget session of Assembly beginning next week, hectic political activity is going on for some time in both the alliance partners with regard to much speculated and talked about Cabinet reshuffle that might happen anytime now, given the fact the exercise is pending for over two years with the coalition government.
Sources said though clear indications are there as to when the Chief Minister will effect reshuffle in his cabinet, which is for long overdue but the two alliance partners are under pressure from different quarters for at least effecting the expansion in the cabinet where the berths are vacant at least for three ministers. Both the parties are also under severe political pressure from strong contenders for the forthcoming Legislative Council elections where at least six seats will fall vacant this April. The contenders have been lobbying with the concerned quarters, mainly the High commands of both the parties for seeking a berth either in cabinet or Legislative Council, said the sources.
Sources said both National Conference and Congress on account of increasing pressure from within their own parties have also started the exercise of finalizing the 'deserving' candidates for both cabinet as well as the Council seats. While the rmours about probable names are agog with some names in both the parties, sources said there are certain names which can finally make it to cabinet are under serious consideration of both the alliance partners . While the ruling NC has only one berth as per the number count each ally can share, Congress can accommodate two people in the cabinet. However, there is also the likelihood that some 'non performing' ministers and those against whom both the parties are dissatisfied on one or the other count may be dropped from the ministry. It is in the backdrop of this, some more leaders in respective parties may get a chance to become ministers .
The Omar Abdullah led coalition government may follow the UPA line of inducting young faces in the cabinet to infuse energy and enthusiasm in governance, sources said. It has also been reliably learnt that some ministers might be dropped from both the camps, which will enable the government to pick up and adjust the new faces in the cabinet. Sources said even as the Chief Minister has got nod from UPA chairperson Sonia Gnadhi and the patron of his own party Dr Farooq Abdullah to go ahead with the decision of inducting young people, the names have yet been finalized. However, the names which are doing rounds in the corridors of the power include Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Dr. Mustafa Kamal and Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo from the National Conference and the people who are eagerly awaiting in the Congress camp include the names like GM Saroori and Mohammad Sharief Niaz.
It may be mentioned that both the parties are trying to balance out in terms of giving representation to the unrepresented districts in the cabinet, something which is vital politically. They are also trying to adjust their senior loyalists in the upper house. The names being discussed in both the camps are Jugal Kishore (Congress), Janak Raj Gupta (Congress), Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma (Congress), Parveen Anand (NC), Rattan Lal Gupta (NC), Dr. Shehnaz Ganai (NC).
Sources close to the ruling alliance confirm that people who cannot be adjusted in either cabinet or Upper House may soon be adjusted as chairmen of the various state owned corporations to make the functioning more effective and progressive.
