EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Feb 26: Admitting a `commonality' had emerged between Peoples Democratic party (PDP) and Hurriyat Conference, the patron of the opposition PDP and former Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayed sought "final and lasting solution to Kashmir problem." Mufti was addressing a huge rally in the summer capital today.
The PDP patron urged New Delhi to "initiate action on areas of consensus between various stake holders from the state."
Listing features of the current Kashmir discourse he said the government must end police repression in the state and release all political prisoners, youth and students arrested as part of state crackdown.
He said reduction of forces in civilian areas, revocation of AFSPA and withdrawal of Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) should be followed up with a round table conference by the Prime Minister to set actual resolution process rolling. "Both separatist and mainstream parties should be part of that initiative. I feel separatists could not spurn such an offer after the demands about release of prisoners and revocation of draconian laws is conceded" he said.
Coming down upon the present state government Mufti said it had virtually wasted the gains made between 2002 and 2008 by turning again turning Kashmir into a cage for its own people.
He asked the NC led government to be a part of solution rather than becoming an impediment and part of problem by unleashing terror on people, arresting innocents, denying civil liberties and pushing the state into another cycle of disturbances. "They are creating fear psychosis by targeting youth to prevent an imaginary June scenario of a doomsday" he said.
Dedicating himself to the resolution of Kashmir problem and revival of the fortunes of the people of the state Mufti said his present political campaign was above power politics. "I am not into the business of toppling governments or grabbing power but I will use my every breath to extricate Kashmir from the abyss of neglect, conflict and misery" he declared to a thunderous applause from the gathering.
He urged the party rank and file and people at large to help him in lifting the siege over Kashmir as "people's power alone and its channeling along non violent and democratic lines could change the destiny of our state".
Party president Mehbooba Mufti in her concluding remarks thanked the people and workers for braving cold and wet weather in such large numbers.
According to Kashmir watchers, Mufti has devised a model which they call `Mufti Model'. Mufti being a staunch politician knows separatism sells in Kashmir. Sayed, therefore, pursues a separatist agenda when going gets tough for him. And when he is in control of the situation, he looks towards New Delhi.
This is exactly what Mufti has been doing since 2002. Mufti won the 2002 elections by tacit support of the separatists. He created history by forcing National Conference to sit in the opposition.
The incumbent Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah also adapted the `Mufti Model' last year. When New Delhi talked about governance deficit and trust deficit, Omar stunned every body by his speech in the Legislative Assembly. He broke all records by challenging the totality of accession. He happens to be the first Chief Minister of the state to challenge accession on the floor of the house. It worked and Omar won many admirers.
