Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 26: In an interesting turn of events, Jammu and Kashmir government which had been denying CBI probe in Chopra murder case for the past 5 years, provoking the sons of deceased cement tycoon to knock at the doors of court, has now formally approached the high profile agency for investigation.
The development has came at a time when a second Special Investigation (SIT) headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Jammu-Kathua range Farooq Khan along with SSP Jammu Basant Kumar Rath and other SIT members SP (Counter Intelligence) Romesh Kumar Angral, SP (Armed) Mahadeep Singh and DySP CID (CI) Jammu Muzaffar Hussain Shah was claiming of solving the case in next few weeks.
Further, the new SIT had begun questioning the accused while the leaks in media had begun pointing towards the involvement of some influential persons in this gruesome murder. However, it has been learnt reliably that a National Conference MLC whose brother was repeatedly quizzed by the new SIT leveled serious allegations against the members constituting the SIT before the Chief Minister.
Sources said that while referring to the investigation conducted by first SIT constituted by the then government, the said MLC accused the new SIT of trying to frame his brother in a false and fabricated case. On hearing, it has been reliably learnt that Chief Minister directed the Home Department to take up the issue with CBI and see to it that the case is handed over to them for investigation at the earliest.
Sources said that Home Department officially approached CBI for the same on February 23, 2011. While the CBI is has not responded to the request so far, sources said that the agency will take up the case since the Chief Minister is personally looking after it. They maintained that SITs constituted to crack murder mystery of cement tycoon and businessman Rajinder Bhushan Chopra alias Raju Chopra, his two family members and helpers, submitted completely different reports.
While the first SIT put the blame on Pardhi gang of murder while another pointed needle of suspicion towards an astrologer and legislator of ruling National Conference (NC) and his brother. Confirming this, Principal Secretary (Home) B.R.Sharma said that government has approached CBI for investigation of the murder case. However, he did not elaborate on why the SIT is not being allowed to complete the investigation.
It needs to be reiterated that Puneet Chopra, son of Rajinder Bhushan alias Raju Chopra, had filed an LPA for transfer of the case to CBI but he withdrew it recently after the newly constituted SIT headed by DIG Farooq Khan began the investigations. The newly constituted SIT grilled Ajab Singh alongwith his business partners and names of businessmen, contractors and relatives of a sitting minister and a legislator had surfaced during the initial investigations.
It needs to be further stressed that Raju Chopra, his wife Madhu, daughter Saloni, servant Sonu and driver Jagan Nath were all murdered at their residence in Trikuta Nagar locality of Jammu on the intervening night of September 17 and 18, 2006, A case FIR number 107 of 2006 was registered at Police Station Trikuta Nagar.
