Citizens Forum demands amendment in MC Act | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 28: Citizens Forum has emphasised the need for an immediate amendment in the Municipal Corporation (MC) Act. In the forum meeting held here Sunday under the chairmanship of its president R K Chadha, it was resolved to launch a movement for an amendment in the MC Act. Chadha said the amendment was needed to make the municipal corporations of Jammu and Srinagar more democratic in nature and the real representative bodies of the citizens. He said the powers should be vested with the Mayor and other elected members of the corporation. Chadha, a prominent social worker, regretted that the powers were at present with the commissioners of the corporations, who were the government nominees. The meeting also demanded that the Mayor should be elected directly by the electorates and their term should be for full five years. Chadha also extended an appeal to all the political parties to form consensus that election to municipal corporations, municipal councils, municipal committees and other local bodies be held on non-party basis so that persons with integrity and acumen in different fields got elected to these bodies to work for the development and welfare of the cities and towns. The forum decided to hold a seminar on these issues in near future. The meeting, among others, was attended by D K Khajuria, Sham Sunder Anand Lehar, Yash Bhasin, Vikram Gour, S K Gupta, Khursheed Kazmi, Mohammad Ayub Khan, Parag Sharma and Kewal Mahajan.
