Ex legislators, senior party leaders meet Farooq | Nengroo, Qureshi, Dutta lobbying for Upper House seats | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 28: With election of six seats of upper House round the corner various leaders and ex legislators have started lobbying to seek the mandate for their election to Upper House. Various leaders of the Party and former ministers have met the National Conference president and Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah to seek party mandate for the election to Upper House. The NC leaders who are lobbying for their election to the upper House included former Minister Bashir Ahmed Nengroo from Pulwama, Kaiser Jamshed Lone from Lolab, Laxmi Dutta, Jagjeevan Lal, sittng MLC M R Qureshi and Altaf Ahmed Kaloo who are completing their term in March are strongly pressing for their re-election. Sources close to the Party said that these leaders are strongly lobbying for seeking elected to Upper House. Bashir Ahmed Nengroo, who has been a minister in Dr Abdullah’s Government from 1996 to 2002 has made it a prestigious point for himself to get elected to one of the seats to upper House this time. Mr Nengroo who is a strong man of NC in Pulwama and whose father Mohammed Akbar Nengroo o has been a close associate of former Chief Minster Late Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah and a strong activist of his Plebiscite Front has made it a prestigious point for him to get elected to the Upper House. Mr Nengroo who is strongly lobbying for his candidature to the Upper House has involved some senior NC leaders for pleading his case before Party High Command. However sources said that a senior leader of the Party and RS member from Pulwama is opposing his candidature. This has led to serious bickerings in the Party with Party men close to Nengroo are challenging the Party MP from Pulwama of being a novice in Party has no authority to challenge its traditional leaders whose family is linked to the Party for over six decades. The sources said that Party High Command is seriously thinking to give Pulwama and Anantnag districts representation in Upper House to meet out the stiff challenge faced by NC from PDP in the twin districts. The NC it may be recalled has only managed to win one Assembly seat from the erstwhile twin districts of Pulwama and Anantnag. So Party is thinking to nominate two such leaders from these districts who have a good public reputation and can take on the PDP on ground, sources added. Sources said that Dr Abdullah is also constant pressure from the Women’s Wing of the Party to nominate Mrs Laxmi Dutta to Upper House. Mrs Dutta who along with ehr activists met Dr Abdullah here few days back is demanding her appointment as chairperson to any Board or election to Upper House. Being under constant pressure regarding the appointment of Mrs Dutta to Upper House Dr Abdullah during yesterday’s Provincial Working Committee meeting of the Party has yesterday told Mrs Bimla Luthra to select a safe constituency for her to contest election next time as Party wants to nominate another woman leader from Jammu region as MLA next time. Both Mrs Luthra and Mrs Dutta were present in the meeting when Dr Abdullah made the announcement.
