Two precious lives were taken by accused for few thousand rupees | | | BHARAT BHUSHAN Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 28: If the guilt statements of the accused are to be relied upon, the February 2 murders of MES employees -- Moti Ram and Bodh Raj -- inside the Udhampur military cantonment were committed for few thousand rupees. The accused -- Jagpal (MES employee), his brother Balbir, Hari Dass and Om Prakash -- had limited sources of income and were always in need of money for their daily needs, Udhampur SSP Surinder Gupta said. All are sweepers by profession. While others did not have any permanent source of income, Jagpal was employed in MES department situated inside Udhampur military cantonment. Being an MES employee, Jagpal had an easy access to the high-security cantonment area and was well acquainted with the victims. He knew that the victims had their salaries with them on the February 2 night, police sources said. Tempted to lay hands on over Rs 30,000 (sum of salaries of Moti and Raj), he conspired to loot them with the assistance of other accused, the sources added. On February 2 night, they went to the MES power station where the victims were on night duty. However, following resistance by Moti and Raj, they allegedly killed them by slitting their throats. Sources said after they were dead, the accused took out the salary of one of them from his pocket and fled the spot. Due to the fear of being caught, or seen at the crime scene, they fled the spot without taking the salary of the other dead, the sources added. The killings inside the cantonment hinted at the involvement of some insider in the incident. Working on different theories, police worked out the case scientifically by collecting fingerprints and other evidence which were enough to place the accused at the scene of the crime. The fingerprints were vital evidence as these matched back to those of the accused and helped in establishing that they had been at the scene of the crime.Soon after the incident, a police team had protected the crime scene as it was the most important aspect of the evidence preservation. This was done to keep the evidence uncontaminated till it was collected. The team worked under the overall supervision of DIG (Udhampur-Reasi range) Jagjit Kumar and SSP, Udhampur, Surinder Gupta.Investigators felt that it was not easy for an outsider to sneak into the tightly-guarded cantonment area to execute the murders and then escape without being seen by any of the alert army guards. Their this suspicion also helped them to solve the case.
