PDP, NC echo resentment in one tone over LAHDC move | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 28: Though the ruling National Conference (NC) and the main opposition party- Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) may have ideological differences over number of issues. But the matter of adoption of new insignia by Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) on the pattern of national emblem has brought these arch rivals on the same platform there by giving a new dimension to the political spectrum in the state. Both the political parties were vociferous in expressing their resentment over LAHDC’s move to discard state emblem along with state flag and replacing them with national emblem depicting famous Ashoka Pillar of Sarnath. The Congress, one of the partners in ruling coalition, however is finding it difficult to either support or denounce the decision of LAHDC. “No body can reject the state’s emblem or flag …. Individual decisions hardly matters.” Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ali Mohammad Sagar maintained while talking to media persons after the Governor’s Address. If the Law Minister plainly rejected the LAHDC decision and reaffirmed the authority of state’s own symbols of governance, the PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti termed the move unfortunate. “The LAHDC decision is very unfortunate….. If BJP or Ladakh Union Territory Front has adopted the resolution it could be understood as they have their own agendas. Since the decision was made by the Council controlled by the Congress, which always advocates integrity of the state, it is most regrettable.” Mehbooba Mufti said The Congress which remained mum over the issue ever since it made headlines in a section of press few days back also broke its silence and tried to tone down the controversy. “No body has rejected either the state flag or the state emblem….No body has done it…. Media is singing and dancing over a non-issue. The LAHDC has its own logo and they made some alterations to it…. That’s it. There is absolutely no question of undermining the importance of state’s flag or emblem.” Minister for Tourism and Congress MLA from Leh Nawang Rigzin Jora asserted. Dr Mustafa Kamal, another National Conference leader and younger brother of Union Minister and president of the party Dr Farooq Abdullah termed the LAHDC decision as mischief. “This is a mischief to sow the seeds of hatred among the people of Leh region….. Congress must make its intentions clear…..They still are on the path of playing mischief by letting us down as they did in past. Let there be ten emblems that will not take the Ladakh away from Jammu and Kashmir. It does not affect the unity of the state in any way……..It has given the wrong signal to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.” Mustafa Kamal said “We are examining the legal as well as other aspects… There was no necessity of any separate emblem. LAHDC was given at a time when there was no elected government in the state…. It was created by the Governor under instructions of Central government which was itself a wrong step.” he added What ever be the ramifications of the LAHDC’s ‘unilateral’ move to make changes in the logo of the Council, the decision is largely perceived as significant in the light of the demand of the people of the snow desert to grant Union Territory status to Ladakh as the experts believe that the new turn of events will further strengthen the resolve of Ladakhis to achieve their goal. It is pertinent to mention here that the LAHDC had adopted an insignia similar to the national emblem by replacing the Jammu and Kashmir's logo in its general council meeting on February 21.
