Army awards architect of Tanda tiger force | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT AKHNOOR, Mar 1: Thakur K.P.Singh who raised Tanda tiger force of civilians during Kargil war of 1999 was presented Northern Army Commander’s commendation card by VSM, General Officer Commanding of Cross Swords Division Major Gen. Rakesh Sharma in a ceremony organized here today. This award was conferred on him by GOC-in-C, Northern Command Lt Gen B S Jaswal. It may be recalled that Army needed 3600 Civilians from Jammu and Kashmir to raise 6 army porter companies of 600 civilians each for helping Army carrying its war like stores and ammunition to high mountain peaks in Kargil sector when Pakistan Army personnel had occupied vacant post in 1999. Knowing the requirement of the Army and the challenge faced by the nation and its urgency, Singh alongwith his companions and associates mainly from Village Tanda of Akhnoor Tehsil numbering 250 reached Udhampur on June 8, 1999 and offered their volunteer services to the Army as Porters. Appreciating his initiatives, Brig T.S.Chauhan, the sub-area commander Udhampur asked K.P.Singh to stay back to get more porters to meet the requirement of 3600. To compliment his efforts and most needed timely help, K P Singh received letters of appreciation from Krishan Kant, Girish Saxena, GOC-in-C, Northern Command and GOC 15 Corps besides many other civilian and military dignitaries.
