Valley’s stray dogs to sneak into Jammu! | | | In lighter vein Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 1: The people of Jammu have a genuine reason to feel worried. The exodus of stray dogs from Kashmir shall begin shortly. But where will the canines go? A question that is likely to cause a political storm. A `Pied Pier’ who claims he will make all stray dogs flee from Kashmir has received the official nod to begin the `noble job’. He is all set to test his efficiency in two municipal wards of Srinagar. The `Piper’, Khurshid Ahmed Mir is known for repelling the rodents from Five Star hotels and commercial installations across the globe. Jammu also teems with stray dogs. According to rough estimates there are 2 lakh dogs in Srinagar city alone. There may be other six to seven lakh canines in rest of the valley. Which means, around 8 lakh dogs will enter Jammu if the `Piper’ succeeds in his mission. According to data furnished by the Municipality, the city of Srinagar has around 200,000 stray dogs. The city needs only 5000 dogs for scavenging. The rest, experts believe have to go. The task of throwing them out has been entrusted to Khurshid the Piper. A Municipal official preferring anonymity said the dogs can be sent to Pakistan administered Kashmir through the historic Jehlum Valley Road. “However, in such an eventuality, the canines have to cross the LoC”, he said jokingly. Jokes apart, the proposal has evoked serious thinking in and out of the municipality. “If the `piper’ is true in his claims, the lodgment of the dogs shall pose a serious problem”, most of them believe. “You are forcing dogs out of an area. Where shall they go? They will definitely enter another area”, they made clear. The municipality is scared of poisoning the dogs for fear of a severe reaction from animal rights defenders. They forced the municipality abandon the idea of poisoning the stray canines two years ago. Pertinent to mention the municipality had bought poison worth Rs 15 lakhs from outside for killing the canines. |
